Task 1 Series, serials and single drama

The difference between series, serials and single drama

Series:
In a series, the story will be broken up into a set number of episodes, with the same title and will be broadcast once a year (per season). It will feature the same main characters, whose personalities the audience will be familiar with; so the viewers know what to expect. Each episode will show a situation which will be resolved at the end of the episode but some story lines continue over the whole series. A series may contain between 6 - 25 episodes per season.

Examples of TV series:
FRIENDS was an American sitcom which was broadcast on Channel 4. The programme features the lives of a group of friends, who live in a New York building. The locations are a coffee house and the friends apartments. It follows a linear narrative structure with closed ending, each episode is a self contained story. The series was so popular that it ran for 10 seasons and had  episodes.

Big Bang Theory
A current American sitcom, which is aired on Channel 4 and E4. The programme consists a group of male friends are scientists who work in a University and a female bartender who lives across the hall. The narrative of each episode is linear and closed. Each one episode has one storyline but some can run over the entire series e.g. Lennon fancies Penny and spends the whole series chasing her. The main locations are the living room area, canteen, cheesecake factory and the University. The series is a very popular sitcom and currently has 6 seasons.

Serial:
A serial is normally a serialisation of a book or event which is only broadcast once. It reflects 'real life' and has between one and four episodes. Popular authors, such as Charles Dickens and  Jane Austen have been serialised, showing what life was like in the Victorian and Edwardian times. Great Expectations and Pride and Predjudice are good examples of a serial. The episodes have open ends, which mean that they have a cliffhanger which makes the viewer want to watch the following episodes.

Examples of TV serials:
Great Expectations
Sherlock Holmes
Pride and Predjudice

Single Drama:
Single dramas are broadcast once and normally reflect real life. They can be classed as a TV film and are shown only once. The themes include topical issues and real life events, Bradford Riots by Neil Biswas was a linear narrative about the race riots in Bradford and was  aired on Channel 4.

Examples of single dramas:
Top Boy
Bradford Riots
White Collar
